Struck String Instruments

In struck string instruments the sound is produced the string being hit with a mallet or hammer. Instruments like the piano or clavichord where the striking is performed through a complex hammering mechanism triggered from a keyboard are the exception. In most struck string instruments the striking is done manually, like in the hammered duclimer, the chitarra battente from Italy, the santouri from Greece, the cimbalom and the tsymbaly from Eastern Europe, the the santoor from India, the khim from Cambodia, the dan tam thap luc from Vietnam, the yanggeum from Korea the yangqin from China, the joochin from Mongolia, and the single stringed berimbau from Brazil.
